Dear Friend,
This post is a continuum from our previous post, Song Dissection: 22 Part 1. Enjoy!
It seems like one of those nights
This place is too crowded, too many cool kids
"One of those nights" refers to the fact that this pattern has happened before. Clearly it is a perfect time to start the journey of self discovery. The word night is not meant to be taken literally. Night merely refers to a time when people can really be themselves, without having the "sun" aka society judging them. The place that the singer refers to is society as a whole, and it is crowded with too many cool kids. Cool kids refers to people who think they have it all together, and are pretentious and exclusive.
It seems like one of those nights
We ditch the whole scene
Similar to the stanza above, this "night" (or time) is perfect to ditch the whole scene. The singer wishes to separate herself from the regulations and expectations of society. As an adventuresome pirate, the singer wishes to separate herself from the normality and venture into the unknown, again searching for self actualization.
And end up dreaming instead of sleeping aaah
This is perhaps the must important line. Sleeping and dreaming happen at night. We have already reviewed that 'night' represents a place of no judgement; a place where people can be and find and create themselves. Dreaming and sleeping however are highly metaphorical. The "cool kids" sleep. They are stagnant and don't learn anything about themselves. When we sleep, we don't get anything accomplished. On the other hand, dreaming is representational of imagining that more is possible. Instead of being in the duldrums of sleeping, the singer will end up dreaming. Instead of staying where she is in her mind, she is going to really search for herself and dream that more is possible for her.
Repeat Chorus
Read the final installment tomorrow in part 3!
Yours truly,
Kylie and Catherine
